NEW HEADS OF SCHOOL
26 Jun 2020
We are delighted to announce our Heads of School for 2020-21: Katharina Lützenkirchen and Nicholas Hobbs.
The current Heads of School are Georgia Bolton and Mateusz Kapustka, who both joined Downside in the Lower Sixth. The commitment they have shown to their roles this past year has been impressive. Despite lockdown, they have remained entirely positive and continued to fully support the School community in every way possible.
Georgia Bolton, Head Girl 2019-20
To be Head Boy or Head Girl of such a remarkable school is an honour, and one which should be embraced with arms wide open. I wish both Katharina and Nick the best of luck, and all the happiness in their final year at Downside. If I had one piece of advice it would be to grasp every opportunity that comes your way, and do not be afraid to do something a little different. I have no doubt that you will both be great leaders of the school taking it from strength to strength next year.
Mateusz Kapustka, Head Boy 2019/20
I have been amazed by the great sense of community [at Downside]: life-long friendships and understanding which just beams from everyone I have met. Downside will be in my heart forever as I am aware of how much of a positive impact it has had on my personality and how it allowed me to develop as a student as well as a person. I would like to wish Katharina and Nick all the best as during those unprecedented times as their journey might not be a bed of roses – there will be a lot of obstacles they come across, but I know they will make our community come back stronger and reunited.
Katharina Luetzenkirchen, Head Girl 2020-21
Downside has allowed me to fulfil my potential, both academically and personally. I am currently studying Latin, History and Mathematics, which I enjoy very much due to the great academic environment of the School. I am hoping to read Theology and Religion at university with the intention of pursuing a career in counter-terrorism.
Downside provides a great variety of co-curricular activities. I most enjoy those in which I get to serve my community and those in need. For me, the best part about Downside is the strong friendships I have been able to build and the great environment that encourages you to become the best version of yourself.
“As Head of School I would like to give back to my community the sense of encouragement I have always felt during my time in Downside. I want to help everyone feel welcome and enable all pupils to get involved in activities that will make their experience at Downside worthwhile.”
Nicholas Hobbs, Head Boy 2020-21
I have been at Downside for four years and am currently studying Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Downside has encouraged me to challenge myself and to get the best out of every opportunity on offer. Being part of many lectio groups has allowed me to develop my spiritual understanding and has brought me closer to God on a personal level. The biggest highlight of Downside so far has been the people I have met and social skills I have developed. Without my group of friends, I would not be the same person right now. As the Head of School, I would like to make the most out of this year, to provide any member of the Downside community with a helping hand wherever it may be. I would like to focus on the care of all pupils, and to provide them in a comfortable environment to ensure they achieve the very best they can at their time at Downside.

Georgia and Mateusz’s legacy to the School has been the setting up of a TEDx licence. The inaugural event – ‘We are Tomorrow’ – was a thought-provoking conference – reflecting the very aim of TEDx talks – that of research, discovery and getting communities to talk and work together for a better future.
