For World Book Day 2019 we are celebrating books originally written in another language or books written by authors in other countries. Our theme this year is ‘Books From Around The World’.

Downside School pupils and staff each chose a book that they love and brought it to the Quad for a whole-school photograph. Our intrepid photographer, Mrs Ryder, climbed to the top of Roberts Tower to capture the moment, while the event was documented from the windows of the Petre Library.

The haul of books includes Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, the intriguingly entitled Madonna in a Fur Coat by Sabahattin Ali and the magical Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende. Go to the library website for a full list of titles.

Pupils are invited to write reviews and design new front covers for their choices; the top five entries will win vouchers for the Book Fair that will be held in the Court of Arches from 20th – 22nd March.

Thanks to the Cultural Institutes of Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Poland we have a fantastic display of beautiful new picture books and novels in many languages in the Petre Library for the weeks around World Book Day.

Happy reading in any language!
