War Memorial Listing

Posted on: 30/03/2017

The Downside War Memorial, situated in the school grounds, has recently been listed at Grade II by Historic England. As part of the organisation’s First World War Commemoration Project, the memorial was considered to be of special architectural or historic interest and has been added to the national register.

There were two reasons for which the Downside memorial was considered to be of special interest;

  • Historic interest: as a poignant reminder of the sacrifice of the pupils of Downside School during the conflicts of the twentieth century
  • Architectural interest: as an elegant and well-executed memorial designed by noted architect Leonard
    Stokes.

It is fitting that in this centenary of the Great War that the sacrifice of all Old Gregorians in that conflict is remembered in such a way.
