End of Year Fun

For the final week of term, post exam stress, pupils have been taking part in an unusual timetable.  Below are just some of the activities that took place.

Powell boys headed off to Westward Ho! to perform an act of Service and Stewardship. With approximately 5000 items of litter per mile of beach in the UK they liaised with Surfers Against Sewage to complete a two hour beach clean. Feeling good about the clean-up they then headed off to a two hour surfing lesson followed by as much pizza as they could eat.

Four pupils helped to create 2 informative and interesting science based walks around the Downside site.  They designed and produced a model solar system in the grounds of the school. It consists of stakes in the ground with a QR code on that can be scanned from any smartphone. This code will take you to information that the students have collected on each planet.  The scale for the model is 1 metre on the ground = 10 million km in space. You can see the positions of the planets here.  The second science based walk uses the QR codes to direct you to information about the type of trees that we have in the grounds. The link here will take you to a google map of the trees in the walk.

The girls from Isabella planted a new garden behind the house and you can follow their blog here

Using poetry, plays, myths and fairy-tales as inspiration, pupils created ‘Seven genres of Downside’- seven short stories of different genres and forms which they wrote, filmed and edited.

Our regular chess players enjoyed learning how to play the Japanese version.  Some third and fourth form pupils ran a retreat for some local primary school children which was much enjoyed by all.
