On Sunday 13th June, the Downside Wanderers Cricket Club visited Downside to play their match against the Old Cheltonians in the 1st Rd Cricketer Cup.

The team were blessed with glorious sunshine from start to finish with blue skies and a backdrop of the School and the Abbey Church from the Cricket Pavilion. The Downside Wanderers were first to bowl with great effort put in by the whole team, however, their chances of a win slipped away with two very good spin bowlers from the Old Cheltonians causing an overall loss by 162 runs.

The President of the Society, Anthony Pontifex (S60), noted ‘it was a pity we didn’t make a fist of it, but the OCs were just a better side on the day’. However, spirits still ran high amongst the team and George Hobbs (R17) agreed it was ‘awesome to be back on the Downside pitch’.

The Downside Wanderers Cricket Team included: Dominic Walker (B03) as Match Manager, Alex Gilbert (S12), Tom Doe (S10), Luke Hickey (R10), Mungo Sheehan (B18), Lawrie Graham (R16), Toby Hanscombe (B13), Harry Waddington (R12), and all three Hobbs boys, James Hobbs (R14), George Hobbs (R17), Charlie Hobbs (R19).

We look forward to welcoming the DWCC back to the School again in the future.
