On Thursday 14th November, the President of St Gregory’s Society, Rupert Orchard (R74), welcomed 150 OGs to the St Gregory’s Society London Dinner at the East India Club in St James’s, his last while presiding, for what turned out to be a great evening.

There was an exceptional turn out across a wide spectrum of generations, the youngest from our most recent leavers in 2019, through to one distinguished OG who left in 1949. The evening was full of laughter and friendship, with a rekindling of memories among like-minded individuals.

Various year groups reunited to celebrate their milestone anniversaries since leaving Downside, including the 1969, 1979, 1989 and 1999 leavers. Special thanks must go to Ian Lane (R69), Willie Hartley Russell (S79), Danny Brennan (S89) and Will Orr (R99) for encouraging attendance of their year groups. Derek Quinlan (S18) put together a table of his contemporaries, many for their first  OG London Dinner. The 89ers won the prize for the best turnout mustering three tables of 10, last seen disappearing to the Corinthia Hotel for some post prandial champagne!

The evening began with a latin grace from Dom Leo and ended with speeches from Rupert who led the toast to Downside School, then Adrian Aylward as Chair of Governors and Andrew Hobbs, Head Master both replied on behalf of the School and spoke about the recent changes at Downside. Zak Attar (C89) then led the participants in a rousing rendition of the School Song.
