Friday was Rock Night here at Downside, as a number of our rock bands wowed parents, staff and fellow pupils with an array of impressive musical talent.

Seb Hall and Nick Hobbs kicked off the evening with Wonderwall by Oasis and The Summer Place by Fountains Of Wayne, with Seb playing the guitar that he made last year.

Next up were The Pips led by Fifth Former Ben. His band featured his brother Ivan as well as fellow Fifth Formers Phileas and Angus. They performed an excellent version of Easy by The Commodores and one of Ben’s own songs Locked Down, which has been officially released and is available to buy or stream at all major online music retailers.

Following The Pips was Black Escalator featuring Maks, Casper and Dylan. Maks’ guitar solo brought down the house. Following them was the dubiously titled Covid 19. They played an interesting mix of songs by artists such as Metallica and Pink Floyd, with a great bass performance from Sixth Former Will Fisher.

Closing the evening were Bath-based professional function band The Payoff, playing classic old and newer songs from artists such as The Killers, Stevie Wonder and The Police. They were joined for an energetic performance of the Amy Winehouse version of Valerie by Downside drum teacher Mr Jobbins.

Mr Child-Cavill provided excellent sound and lighting, ably assisted by Fourth Former Lola, Sixth Former Alex Harwood and Fifth Former Dominic (who also hosts the School Radio Show).
