RED WEDNESDAY UPDATE
29 Nov 2018
On Wednesday 28th November Downside School joined with thousands of other organisations and groups across England and even the world to show solidarity with persecuted Christians and those of other faiths in the annual #RedWednesday campaign.
This campaign was organised by the Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need and Christian Solidarity Worldwide. On this day they invited people to wear red and to ‘see red’. Aid to the Church in Need gave out thousands of ‘red glasses’ and ‘I promise’ cards, asking that we promise to stand up for Faith and Freedom, that we promise to speak up for suffering Christians and others, that we promise to support Christ and his suffering Church and that we promise to Go to Mass and Adoration for the persecuted.
Here at Downside, the Abbey was lit up red for the whole week, a pupil and staff service was held in the old chapel on the 27th, a Mass was said for persecuted Christians in the Abbey, everyone was invited to wear red and we enjoyed an array of ‘red’ food for lunch on the 28th.
This annual campaign highlights the struggles and suffering of many of the our Christian brothers and sisters who struggle to express their faith, something that we so easily take for granted daily here at Downside and in England.
