Downside School is delighted to announce a further improvement on last year’s A level grades.

The proportion of A* grades has risen to 15% (11% in 2018) and A*/A grades to 36% (35% in 2018). There was a number of outstanding performances from individual pupils, with 17% of the cohort achieving 3 or more A*/A grades, improving on last year’s figure of 12%. The overall picture has been of improvement across all the grade boundaries (A*-B grades have risen from 62% to 63% and A*-C from 82% to 89%). Our performance in facilitating subjects continues to be strong and these results provide a very sound basis for entrance to the top universities and for future employment.

Our pupils continue to show improvement in the latest set of GCSE results mirroring the A level success. Nearly a third of grades are 9 & 8, equivalent to A* (under the previous grading system), and almost exactly half the grades were 9-7, equivalent to A*/A. 71% of entries achieved grades 9-6. We are delighted with the results in the STEM subjects which are particularly impressive. We are introducing new courses in Computer Science in September to build on our strength in this area and our relationship with ScienceScope offers our pupils exciting opportunities to extend their practical experience.

“This impressive performance throughout the School is testament to the hard work of pupils and staff. At Downside we are committed to empowering our pupils to achieve their full potential and I am delighted that our focus on academic excellence is reflected in their success.”

Andrew Hobbs, Head Master.
