On Thursday 2nd October, we were thrilled to welcome acclaimed pianist Nurry Lee to Downside for a captivating piano masterclass. Music scholars Nathaniel and Conrad, along with Upper Sixth former Maria, had the opportunity to perform for Nurry and receive expert guidance on technique, expression, and interpretation.
Nurry encouraged our pupils to think of the piano as an orchestra, exploring the character of each piece and learning how to break down complex passages for more effective practice. Watched on by an audience of fellow pianists, Music scholars and GCSE/A level Music pupils, the three performers made remarkable progress in their interpretation and musicality.
Nurry also shared insights into her career in music, her time at a London conservatoire, what it was like to fulfil a lifelong dream of performing at the Carnegie Hall in New York, and exciting upcoming projects. Her performances of Liszt’s Tarantella, a breathtaking arrangement of the Pas de Deux from The Nutcracker, and an impromptu rendition of themes from How to Train Your Dragon left the audience spellbound.
Congratulations to Nathaniel, Conrad, and Maria for their outstanding performances, and heartfelt thanks to Nurry Lee for an unforgettable experience for performers and audience alike.
