On Wednesday 14th May, a group of pupils and staff had the privilege of exploring the rich history and architecture of Downside School and the Abbey Church, guided by international concert pianist, Philip Fowke (B67).

Mr Fowke delivered a fascinating and insightful narrative detailing the development of Downside. He traced its origins from the Old House—a mansion built in 1814—through the establishment of the Old Chapel in 1823, illustrating how the School gradually evolved from these early foundations, sharing his fond memories of his time here. He also described the complex and often challenging journey of constructing the Abbey Church, which began in 1878 and culminated in its consecration in 1935.

The tour concluded with refreshments at the Notre Dame Café, where guests enjoyed a selection of homemade brownies and cakes generously baked by Mrs Maggs.

A memorable highlight of the day was Mr Fowke’s impromptu performance of Widor’s Toccata on the Compton organ—a truly spectacular and uplifting moment for us all.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mr Fowke for his time, passion, and unwavering commitment to preserving and sharing the story of Downside.
