This Summer term, Librarian, Janet Craig, piloted an Oral History Project at Downside School with Sixth Form pupils.

The aim of the project is for pupils to interview Old Gregorians and staff about their experiences and memories of their time at  Downside. The first interviews were conducted last week, with two groups consisting of three Sixth Formers, a staff member, and one OG. The individual interviews took place in separate rooms and lasted around 30 minutes each. Some of the topics covered included first impressions, school trips, house competitions, memories of food, accommodation, extra-curricular activities and the School Rules.

Recording people’s memories of their time at Downside is an important part of understanding the Schools history and with the help of Anthony Steiner (B60) and Peter Jenkins (U67) we were able to begin this journey. We hope that this is something that can be continued for years to come, and an archive of stories like this can be kept within the Petre Library for all School staff and pupils to have access to.

We would like to thank Anthony and Peter for their help last week, and hope that they will be able to return to the School once again to share their wisdom. If you would like to take part in the next set of interviews for the Oral History Project, please email oldgregorians@downside.co.uk for more information.
