On Wednesday 16th October, Downside School was privileged to welcome Oliver Pawle (U68), a distinguished OG and Chair of one of the world’s leading executive search firms, for an inspiring talk with our Sixth Form pupils. The event, held in the Fleischner Theatre, was titled The World is Your Oyster, and it offered an opportunity for pupils to gain valuable insights from someone with extensive experience in major global institutions.

Oliver’s career spans senior roles in world-renowned banks, as well as a significant presence in the entrepreneurial sphere as the founder of the Centre for Entrepreneurs. Additionally, his work with several Catholic charities and his deep-rooted faith have been cornerstones in both his professional and personal life. During the talk, Oliver shared how his faith has shaped his journey, particularly during times of challenge and critical decision-making.

Focusing on the theme of global opportunities, Oliver highlighted the wealth of career paths open to young people today, with special emphasis on Europe and the UK. He encouraged pupils to explore these possibilities, reminding them that the world is indeed their oyster, ready to offer a plethora of opportunities for those with vision and determination.

Pupils were also given the chance to engage directly with Oliver, sharing their career aspirations – from medicine, law, and interior design, to entrepreneurial ambitions. Oliver, with his vast experience, was keen to impart practical advice, particularly about gaining business experience early and seeking mentorship from industry leaders to help navigate the complex professional landscape.

The evening concluded with a Q&A session, where pupils eagerly posed questions about his career trajectory, his experiences navigating the corporate world, and how his faith played a role in some of his most difficult decisions.

Following the talk, Oliver joined pupils for supper in the Refectory, where the conversation continued in a more informal setting, allowing for further exchanges and thought-provoking discussions.

We are immensely grateful to Oliver for his time, wisdom, and support of Downside. His visit not only provided our Sixth Form pupils with a wealth of knowledge and inspiration but also demonstrates the long-lasting connection Old Gregorians have with the School.
