Thank you to David Lumley (R75) for sharing a poem written in the style of William Topaz McGonnagal.

“It happened just the other day
That some OG golfers gathered at the New Zealand to play,
Even though the clouds were quite low
Against a similar group from a school called Stowe.
The bacon sandwiches and coffee were included in the fee
So they were all consumed before the golfers approached the first tee.
Before them the fairways, greens and bunkers lay
A sight almost as pretty as the silvery Tay.
Balls were struck with vigour and might
Some went straight but most went left or right.
After eighteen holes of golf in the greensomes format
To the usual immodest lunch they all sat.
During the meal a very interesting debate ensued
About whether foursomes in the afternoon would be the method used.
And it was decided that it would.
So upon that basis on the first tee they stood.
Thus began the second circuit of the day
At the end of which the men of Stowe held sway.
But I really would very much like to say
Bring on Sherborne next week without delay.”

Sadly, we were narrowly beaten by Sherborne the following week. Image taken at the 2024 Halford Hewitt.
