Someone up there must like us….
A score of OG golfers descended on Somerset for two pleasantly sundrenched days, with only light breezes, and superlative golf on two wonderful courses, both in excellent condition.
Mendip, on Thursday 18th June, with its staggering views, across to and beyond Glastonbury Tor and, on another axis, to the Bratton White Horse with beyond that Salisbury plain shimmering in the far distance.
And on Friday the 19th, the nonpareil Burnham & Berrow, on the North Somerset coast, an Open Final Qualifying venue – “a world-class links layout set amongst towering sand dunes”. We are so lucky. Sadly at Mendip a comms snafu meant that the boys did not get their fair share of golf. Apologies.
Mendip Winner – Jeremy Kenyon
Quite apart from the lovely golf, an excellent time was had by all, with old friendships renewed and new faces joyously welcomed. After Mendip, an excellent dinner was much enjoyed at B&B, where the dormy house had been hired for the night. After dinner we got down to the AGM, where several actions were agreed which should take the Society in a very positive direction on a variety of issues; and thanks were voted to those who have put in a lot of work for the Society – Michael Liddell, who continues as the Hon Sec, David Lumley, who has recently taken over as Treasurer, and Richard Kenyon, who as Society Manager will continue to drive the Society, well, frankly, onwards and upwards.
The next day, the morning foursomes produced the shock of the year in that the President (R, 1969) was in the winning pair,…together with Alasdair Grievson (honorary member of the Society), which helps explain. In the afternoon singles, the Scratch Cup was won by Alasdair, the Gregorian Bowl for the Stableford Singles by Jeremy Kenyon, and the Veterans’ Trophy by Chris Thomas.
It had been feared that this would be our last outing to B&B, in view of rising costs, but on the day it seemed that there might be an opening. Watch this space
