New Head of Rugby

We are delighted to welcome Alex Burns to Downside as our new Head of Rugby.

A former student at The Royal School Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Alex earned A grades in Biology, Geography and ICT at A Level, before achieving a BSc (Hons) 2:1 degree in Sport & Exercise Science from the University of Bath.

An RFU Level 3 Coach and a Level 2 Strength & Conditioning coach, Alex has acquired significant coaching experience in a range of educational contexts and was a boarding assistant for one year at both Millfield (UK) & Dilworth School (NZ).

Presently Director of Rugby at Royal Wootton Bassett Academy where he manages the Mad Dog Sport Ltd coaching programme founded by ex-Bath & England legend Lewis Moody, Alex will take up the position as Head of Rugby Development at Downside in January 2019.

Alex is the Bath Rugby Academy U15’s Head Coach where he has worked with our existing pupils already in the EPDG talent pathway.

Alongside his coaching experience with Bath Academy, Alex is also the Somerset County U16’s Head Coach.

We are hugely excited by the ambition that Alex has for Downside rugby, building on the excellent foundations laid by Mike Baxter.

We are delighted to have appointed Alex and we are certain that under his guidance high quality leadership, coaching, mentoring and guidance for our present and future rugby talent is assured and that the reputation of Downside rugby will continue to develop and grow.
