On Wednesday 22 March Joanna Doliwa came to Downside to talk about Neuroscience.

Joanna left Downside in 2020 during the pandemic, and having completed her A levels during the first lockdown, she went on to become an undergraduate at the Jagiellonian University of Kraków in Poland, where she is currently studying Neuroscience. During her studies, she undertook a semester abroad at the University of Bordeaux in France, setting up the first Polish Language Neuroscience podcast and coordinated a European conference for early career neuroscientists.

During her day at Downside, Joanna ran a careers focussed workshop with Fourth Form pupils. She explained a range of different career pathways within neuroscience and challenged pupils to complete a questionnaire sorting them into cognitive or biological neuroscientists. They were set tasks related to their chosen fields: the biological neuroscientists explored the action potential, while the cognitive neuroscientists designed a task measuring the effect of musical training on memory.

Joanna also spoke as part of our Sixth Form Lecture Series about the breadth of possibilities available in the field of neuroscience, and her experiences as a current undergraduate student.
