Languages Outreach at Downside School

As part of the pupils end of term activities, pupils from Third, Fourth and Fifth Form travelled to St Julian’s Primary School and Croscombe School for Language Outreach sessions.

All pupils involved were able to share knowledge at both Schools. The session began with a presentation on the importance of learning languages, followed by a Spanish lesson at St Julian’s Primary School and French lesson at Croscombe School. As part of the French lesson pupils were able to practice how to order food in a restaurant whilst learning about French traditions and customs.

One of the Third Form pupils involved said about the experience:

During three days in June, I went to two schools to talk about why it is important to learn other languages. My experience at the two schools was amazing. At both schools the children were really engaged in the topic and asked a lot of questions. Apart from me talking about the importance of languages, we also taught a bit of French and Spanish at the schools. In the second school, the children were quite eager to learn more of French and even wrote some stuff down for us to translate for them. We said some sentences in French and they repeated after us. In the first school, where we talked more about Spanish, it was fun to have them ask questions and we answered. We also played a little game of hangman at the end and that was great as well. I found the whole experience very fun and enjoyed it very much.
