The Order of Malta’s St John’s Day Ceremony took place at the Brompton Oratory, London, in June. It was a particularly momentous day when Richard Grew (R13) and Charlie Hofton (S02) were awarded the prestigious Silver Medal of Merit from the Knights of Malta.
Since 1920, this medal has been presented on an annual basis to individuals who demonstrate the essence of service through their actions, both at a local and global level.
Citation from the Ceremony:
Richard has never faltered in his commitment to the OMV over the past ten years, including serving as an Elected Member in 2015. He has participated in most of our activities and especially the International Holiday Camp, for six years. His constant and unwavering commitment has helped the OMV’s activities to flourish.
Charlie has been a stalwart figure in the OMV for over two decades. Since first coming to Lourdes in 2001, he has volunteered in many aspects of the pilgrimage, including Equipe Leader, Soutien and Ward Co-ordinator. Charlie has also been to Lourdes with the British Association of the Order since 2017 as a Team Leader. He has been a humble and dependable participant.
Congratulations to both from all at Downside.
Downside and the OMV have maintained a strong link since its inception, actively participating in the annual OMV pilgrimage to the renowned city of Lourdes. This pilgrimage holds a special place in the hearts of generations of Downside Sixth Formers and Old Gregorians. Participants of the pilgrimage enthusiastically share their experiences of aiding those in need, forging lasting friendships, and enriching their faith.
The profound impact of the journey often leads many volunteers to return year after year, a testament to the exceptional quality of the Lourdes experience they cherish.
The support provided by St Gregory’s Society is deeply appreciated, as they generously provide a grant to pupils attending the OMV Lourdes Pilgrimage, covering a portion of the trip’s cost.
We look forward to hearing from this year’s attendees and wish pupils, OGs and other volunteers well as they embark on the 2023 Pilgrimage, beginning 21st July.
