Downside School House Singing Competition

The hotly anticipated House Singing Competition took place on Wednesday 5th October in the Theatre.

It must be noted that the pupils put serious hours of preparation into their performances, and our Heads of Houses and their leadership teams must be congratulated for having worked tirelessly with them.   With the entire School community coming together to support and cheer them on, the moment of truth came at the end of the evening when the judges made their decision.  Thank you to the Music Department and House Teams for their support in what is always a wonderful event.

Matthew Stanislas, Head of Smythe House shared his words about the evening:

After a substantial amount of preparation squeezed into the assembly room, Smythe was raring to go. On the night of  house singing the theatre was heavily crowed, waiting tensely for the competition to start. Smythe started with a very technical part song, where the likes of: Ayrton, Luke, Pavel, Dylan, Euan, and Charlie created some very authentic and beautiful sounds among their harmonies. After a loud cry from the audience, the rest of Smythe stepped up onto the stage to sing Jerusalem. The hymn brought the house into unison as we hit some high notes that would not usually be associated with male voices. Following a very strong performance, we prepped backstage for the final song, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ fitting Ivor into his costume and Ollie into his Ali G suit. Two strong solos from Ayrton and Ivor propelled the song into motion with dance moves also into full effect. Not to mention Pavel’s star performance on his trumpet solo where he brought down the house with his flair and finesse. Special mentions must go to Ollie for his unique style of conducting as well as Dylan and Ethan who played the accompaniment. Having given everything, Smythe were awarded with the best part song, the best instrumental solo, and the best house of the other gender. Congratulations must also be given to all the other houses who made this singing competition one to remember. Incredible effort from the stags and onto the next house competition!
