On the evening of Thursday 8th September 2022, the UK and the rest of the world received the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In the hours and days that followed, members of the Downside Community, alongside the rest of the nation, reflected on the enormous impact the Queen had on everyone’s lives.

Pupils and Staff gathered in the Old Chapel throughout the evening on 8th September, where candles were lit, and messages of condolence recorded. The following day, Friday 9th September, the entire School and Wider Downside Community came together in the Abbey Church for a Requiem Mass in memory of Queen Elizabeth II. The Service began at 1pm, led by Fr Michael Patey, the School Priest Chaplain, with pupils, current and past parents, Old Gregorians and the local community uniting. The elegant voices of the Chamber Choir filled the Abbey Church and provided an opportunity to reflect on the lifelong service given to the UK and Commonwealth by Her Majesty The Queen.

On Monday 19th September, the State Funeral was shown in the Fleischner Theatre and in each boarding House common room for all pupils and staff on site to unite and take part in what was a magnificent celebration of a life well lived.

Many Old Gregorians were involved with tasks leading to the State Funeral, with some actively involved with the procession and service itself. No matter their role, the representatives of the Old Gregorian Community took to their position with the upmost honour and dignity.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
