We are delighted to announce that Dr Giles Mercer has been appointed as Chair of Governors at Downside School from 20th June 2020.
Andrew Hobbs, Head Master, said of the news, “We are privileged to have Dr Mercer as our new Chair of Governors and I look forward to working with him to continue the development of Downside, building on the legacy of Adrian Aylward, his predecessor.”
Dr Mercer, former Head Master of Stonyhurst and Prior Park Schools, has long been close to Downside. As a devout Catholic and a distinguished historian and published author, he is a regular visitor to the Monastery Archives and Library and often attends Mass at Downside’s Abbey Church. His credentials as a leading educationalist are second to none and his vast wealth of experience will be extremely valuable as he takes the helm at this distinguished independent school in Somerset.
