Last week Downside School Fourth and Lower Sixth Form artists went on a study visit to The National Museum Cardiff. The Museum contains an amazing collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionists paintings including works by Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Van Gogh.
The Museum also houses a number of works by modern Welsh painters, and particularly impressive were landscape paintings by Kyffin Williams. Currently also on exhibition is Artes Mundi – a contemporary art show which includes paintings, film installations, photography, tapestries and sound sculptures.
The students learned to look at paintings and analyse them both through written appraisal and sketches. They had an excellent guide who explained the ideas behind the artists’ work, which really broadened pupils’ perception of what is art. In the afternoon the Fourth Form spent time in the natural history section of the Museum collecting visual images for their current project ‘Organic’. We managed to fit a great deal into the day and the students have returned to School enriched with ideas which we will share with you as the term progresses on our soon-to-be-launched Students Monthly Art Gallery.
