On Monday 6th November, we welcomed Charles Wookey (R75) and Philip Fowke (B67), back to Downside alongside Michael Bevan, grandson of Roger Bevan, who served as the Music Director at the School for over 30 years.

The day fell into two distinct parts, first, an open rehearsal and instructional class, followed by an evening performance open to the public. Pupils and staff involved in the first aspect of the day were provided with the unique privilege of hearing the First Movement of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto performed by Charles and Michael, with Philip guiding them through intricate sections that bring everything together as one. This allowed pupils to see a glimpse of the preparation required for such a demanding piece, from the notes played to the silences and moments of elongated pause that build to the overall piece.

Charles Wookey is a keen amateur pianist who has dreamed of playing this piece for over 50 years. So together with his wife, they crafted a plan to bring his ambition to life whilst combining it with a charity concert. Charles last played in a piano concerto 49 years ago with the School orchestra during his time at Downside and was lucky enough to be taught by Philip, who was then studying piano at the Royal Academy.

Philip shared with pupils that it was in the Old Chapel at Downside where Roger Bevan first planted the seed that he could become a professional concert pianist, which led to a distinguished career as an international musician and a renowned teacher. He has performed Rachmaninoff’s Second Concerto many times, including professionally recording it. Philip, who has now retired from playing and teaching, agreed to help Charles prepare for a charity concert at the end of November to raise funds for a hospice in Eastbourne. It was through Philip’s connection that Michael also agreed to take on the role of orchestra and perform alongside Charles at Downside’s test run before the full charity concert.

Following the open rehearsal, Upper Sixth Former, Jan and Fourth Former, Emily, who is also the first Sill Organ Scholar at Downside, had the opportunity to showcase a piece they had each been practising. During their pieces, Philip provided valuable guidance and insights, such as different pedalling techniques for enhanced control, innovative ways to play scales for improved coordination, and exercises to strengthen their hands. This instructional session proved to be an invaluable learning experience for all our pupils!

As evening guests arrived, the atmosphere was already building with anticipation as the Steinway Model B and Grand Piano, two of the generously donated pianos the School was fortunate to receive earlier in the year, were placed centre stage, ready for the full performance.

Director of Music, George Bevan welcomed Charles, Philip and Michael to the stage, where Philip shared background context about the concerto itself. Subsequently, Charles and Michael delivered an exceptional rendition of the concerto, known for its intricate melodies and profound emotional depth. The event not only showcased the incredible musical talent associated with the School but also served as an inspiration for our pupils.

We are extremely grateful that Charles initiated this plan and offered his time, alongside Philip and Michael. It was a truly extraordinary performance. We wish Charles the best of luck for his final performance on 26th November at Birley Centre, Eastbourne College with a full orchestra.
