On Saturday 18th September, the Downside Association welcomed current and past parents, OGs and their families to Downside for Super Saturday.  A day full of sport with hockey, rugby, football, and badminton, followed by our famous match teas in the Main Hall.

Having been denied the opportunity to get together for so long, it was fantastic to see so many parents (current and past) and OGs of so many different vintages enjoying the beautiful Somerset countryside once again and supporting our teams.

The day began with mist and fog covering the pitches, which soon cleared as the sun broke through the clouds just in time for spectators to enjoy their complimentary welcome drink and join the first fixture of the day, the OG Football against the School. The Captain of the Old Gregorian Football Club, Jorge Baltazar (R15), remarked on the enjoyment all players had in returning to the School for a competitive match, with the end result 7-1 to the OGFC.

The 1st XI Hockey Team was the first School fixture of the day and played extremely well against Milton Abbey, with the match ending on 4-0 to Downside. Meanwhile, on the other side of Green Lane, the 1st XV and 2nd XV Rugby Teams set up for their matches against Bryanston. The 1st XV was able to steal a win in what was a close match. Taking it to the courts in the Sports Hall, Downside performed well against Sherborne in the badminton, with players showing great enthusiasm and control.

Congratulations to all players who took part in the day and thank you to our visiting schools for participating in Super Saturday.

The day felt like a real celebration, with special thanks to the Downside Association who provided the welcome drink and to Holroyd Howe for the delicious BBQ served at the Pavilion. Thank you to all spectators who joined us from near and far for a truly ‘super’ day.

Keep 12th March pencilled in your diary in preparation for our next Super Saturday.
