DOWNSIDE AND MARY’S MEALS
Downside School are proud to sponsor Nkhwazi Primary School in Malawi through the charity Mary’s Meals.
Mary’s Meals’ vision is that every child deserves an education and enough to eat. This amazing charity works with a wide range of partners, such as Downside School, to help achieve this. Downside’s support means that every pupil at Nkhwazi School receives a daily meal.
Nkhwazi School is a humble one, like many in Malawi, and indeed much of Africa. It has 401 pupils (220 boys and 181 girls), 12 permanent classrooms and 13 teachers. Without help for schools like Nkhwazi, many of their pupils would be working in the fields or begging on street corners. The charity, founded by Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, has gone from feeding 200 children in Malawi in 2002 to providing over 1.4m children across 18 countries with a life-changing meal every day. Magnus set up the charity after visiting Malawi during a famine and asking a child, whose mother was dying, what his dream was. The answer? “To have enough food to eat and go to school one day.” Something many not only take for granted, but even complain about at times.
