Bursaries at Downside School

Posted on: 08/12/2025
Recent sector-wide research highlights a continuing decline in bursary provision across independent schools, driven by significant financial pressures and recent government legislation. However, Parent Power’s analysis shows that Downside School allocated the highest levels of support for means-tested bursaries and scholarships in the country last year, after Christ’s Hospital, reflecting our deep commitment to widening access.

Downside remains firmly committed to ensuring that pupils from the widest range of backgrounds can benefit from a Downside education, regardless of financial circumstances. This principle is central to our mission and will not change. However, rising costs – including VAT on fees, the end of business rate relief and higher national insurance contributions – have placed substantial pressure on school finances.

Interim Head, Mike Randall confirmed:
“Downside has always stood for opportunity, character and community, and our commitment to supporting families through bursaries is one of the clearest expressions of that mission. I am incredibly proud of the diversity and richness every pupil bring to our school, strengthening our community in countless ways. Even in the face of increased financial pressures, we remain determined to do everything within our power to maintain this commitment and ensure that a Downside education remains accessible to all pupils whatever their background.”
