We were delighted to welcome Heywood Prep Year 5 pupils and their teachers to Downside last week for an Art Experience Day.

The aim of the day was for each child to make and bind a sketchbook, using new skills and techniques they would learn on the day. After a hearty welcome from the Head Master, Head of Art Erica Williams and Artist-in-Residence Holly Warburton showed the visitors how to make marbled papers which would be used for the outer covers of the book. Gasps of amazement filled the Art Studio as the pupils saw their blank paper sheets turn into an array of vibrant patterns.

Whilst the papers were drying, the pupils selected different types of paper to fill their books, and then bound them together. After lunch, and full of confidence from skills learnt in the morning, the pupils explored the Artist-in-Residence’s studio which is packed with a variety of  painting, models and prints. They then learnt how to paint effective silhouettes in just a few brush strokes of ink. The event culminated in a short tour of the magnificent Abbey Church.

“The best bit of today was the marbling.” Heywood Prep Year 5 pupil
