Advent Carol Service 2025

Posted on: 12/12/2025

The Basilica of St Gregory was standing room only for last night’s Advent Carol Service, led by Fr Michael Patey. It was wonderful to see the whole community – pupils, staff, OGs and friends – come together to mark this season of preparation as we await the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The choir, made up of pupils from the Schola Cantorum, Mixed Chamber, Boys’ Chamber and Girls’ Chamber choirs, sang a beautiful selection of pieces, including And the Glory of the Lord (Handel), There is no rose of such virtue (Joubert), and Syng of Mayden (Allan) and accompanied by Matt Walters on the organ (B18). They also led traditional congregational carols such as O Little Town of Bethlehem and O Come, O Come, Emmanuel. First Form pupils in the “training” Schola Cantorum also had the opportunity to open the with first verse of The Shepherd’s Carol (Chilcott).

Downside’s annual Carol Service is a cherished way to end the term, bringing our community together in prayer and song as we celebrate the joy of Christmas.
