Many of our Monastery Archives and Library volunteers took part in a workshop recently focusing on medieval manuscripts.
Held by Professor George Ferzoco from Bristol University, the event gave our volunteers the chance to learn more about manuscripts as well as the Downside collections. Professor Ferzoco is currently working to create a catalogue of the fifty-sixty manuscripts we hold here, thus he was able to utilise many of these for our workshop.
Our volunteers were lucky enough to see items including the 11th century Lambach Prophetorum, 14th century Baston MS and many more. All our volunteers were fascinated by the wide range of the manuscripts and the process that went into making such incredible documents. In a world where books can be produced so quickly, it was a chance to wonder at the time and hard work that created these wonderful examples of medieval texts.
Our thanks go to George for the fascinating workshop and we look forward to more of these insightful events.
