This year’s Christmas Carol Service was a service unlike any other. Pre-recorded (following Covid-safe guidelines) and streamed to families, Old Gregorians and friends, the Service was just as poignant, atmospheric and as enjoyable as ever.

Due to the online nature of the Service, we were able to share it with families and Old Gregorians around the world from Chile and Mexico to Hong Kong, Canada and Australia. Thanks to technology, we filmed many of the performances in front of green screens and then projected the singers and musicians into the Abbey Church which, at the time of recording, was not open to visitors.

Alongside music performed by pupils and staff including Sixth Form choristers of the Schola Cantorum, the Boys’ Chamber Choir, the Girls’ Chamber Choir, and the CCF Pipe & Drums Band, and a virtual Parents’ Choir, we also had a virtual OG Choir featuring; Ana del Real (113), Will Edwards (C02), Nicholas Ferrar (U79), Hannah Field (I14), Guy Lockwood (S16), Joanna Hornik (I11), Caitlin Murphy (C14), Neil Sirkett (B61), Isaac Tse (R17) and Antonia Wright-Morris (C19)

The Service included a welcome from the Head Master, Andrew Hobbs, the Gospel, prayers and blessings from Fr James, and readings from the Head Boy and Head Girl, and from Jonathan Grew (C77), President of the St Gregory’s Society. A truly moving service bringing us together whilst we are far apart.

The response from Old Gregorians following the service have been extremely positive. From thanks to all involved to recognition of the ‘choral strengths [that] have persisted and grown since the mid 60s‘. It has been great to hear such positive feedback after the ‘forward thinking approach‘ that the School has used to make this event such a success. We look forward, and welcome, more feedback from the OG Community in the coming days.
