SIMON PARKER AT DOWNSIDE

‘A reporter’s adventures in over 100 counties (by the age of 30!)’
Last week we welcomed Simon Parker to Downside for the start of the 2021/22 Sixth Form Lecture Series.
Sixth Former Ollie Wood attended the lecture and reports: ‘Simon Parker is a British travel writer, broadcast journalist and public speaker. His fascinating talk took us through the adventures and, in many cases, life threatening experiences he has had as a reporter throughout his life.
Simon explained how, as a 17-year-old, he was unsure as to what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, until one night he realised it was his dream to travel to all the 195 countries in the world. A 133-day sail and cycle from China to London with little money is testament to Simon’s incredible resilience and resourcefulness. He did not allow his young age and lack of resources to stop him to pursue his dream.
Simon Parker’s powerful talk will undoubtedly have an impact on us as young adults who perhaps, at times, lack confidence, ambition, and drive, and show us that even the biggest and far-fetched dreams are achievable. This talk certainly left an impression on us and showed us what we can do as young adults.’
