Powell is the House for boys in their junior years, Forms 1, 2 and 3, which for many pupils represents their first experience of boarding. The accommodation – two dormitories subdivided into private living areas, a large, comfortable day room, and a well-equipped games room and kitchen – is excellent and has recently been refurbished.

Powell House takes its name from Blessed Philip Powell, a monk of St Gregory’s at Douai, who was martyred at Tyburn in 1646.

The nurturing environment of Powell allows junior boys the chance to develop confidence, organisational ability and skills to support them on their journey through education and life. Supported by an experienced House and tutor team, they are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities afforded to them at Downside. Academic endeavour and excellence are rewarded in equal measure, often with chocolate! Living as a civilised and well-ordered community, the boys participate in a range of co-curricular activities, which help to form lasting friendships outside their destined Senior House. Links are also established with their Senior Houses through 6th Form Prefects (often Powell Old Boys) and house activities/competitions such as sport and music. The years in Powell are often remembered fondly by older students and OGs, especially the various trips and residentials.

We are always busy and searching out new and fun activities for Powell boys. Since September 2022 our trips have included paintballing, cinema, trampolining, ten pin bowling, Bristol Flyers basketball, Bath rugby match, England rugby match, pantomime, shopping in Bath and Ninja Warrior.

Saturday evening activities have included 5-a-side Football, games nights, Film & Popcorn nights, Silent Disco, international football and rugby. Our ever-popular Saturday evening food themes have included delicious Chinese (Lunar New Year), Mexican, Italian, American, Indian and Spanish cuisine.

At Powell, we have House Parents seven days a week, who support the boys with everything they need including emotional support, First Aid/Health Centre referrals, Laundry, uniform and keeping the House and bedrooms tidy.
