Contrary to popular opinion Downside is not a wealthy institution. It has no endowment and is effectively managed by the Trustees as a business.
The monks’ commitment to education is undiminished and evident in the thriving Catholic co-educational boarding school here as well as opening up the Monastery Library and Archives to a wider public to learn more about monastic life and Catholic history. They have a clear vision on which to build a sustainable future.
Over the last 400 years, philanthropic support has made a big difference to what has been achieved and continues to do so today.
- We plan to develop the Abbey Church and the Monastery library to create a Catholic Benedictine heritage centre in the heart of Somerset
- We plan to improve teaching and learning and invest wisely in facilities and resources to become the best Catholic co-educational boarding school in the country
- We plan to provide access to our educational resources regardless of means by the provision of bursaries
