Anna McGarry – HsM Caverel
Anna is becoming House Mistress of Caverel House. She is currently Head of English at Prior’s Field School. She has a degree in Drama from Manchester University where she went on to complete her PGCE in English and Drama. She also has a Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology from the Open University and an MSc in Learning and Teaching from Oxford University. She will be teaching GCSE Drama, A level Drama & Theatre, and English in the School. Anna has taught in a variety of schools both in the UK and abroad. She is married to Alan and has two sons who will join the School in September. She is a keen and strong swimmer and enjoys a variety of water sports. Other interests include watching live performing arts, reading, walking, yoga and keep fit, film making and photography. She loves the outdoors and is very interested in ecological issues and living sustainably. She has considerable experience in extra-curricular activities particularly drama, public speaking and debating.

Daniel McLean – HsM Roberts
Daniel joins us from Rugby School as House Master of Roberts House. He has been Head of Philosophy and Theology at Rugby since 2015 and is also a Deputy Housemaster. He was educated at Maidstone Grammar School and spent five years in the Royal Navy before going to Oriel College, Oxford, to study Theology. His first teaching post was at Ardingly College, where he introduced rowing and edited Logos, the College’s journal of Divinity and Philosophy. At Rugby he is the Contingent Commander of the CCF and Master in Charge of Polo. He lists many and diverse interests including, theology, ecclesiastical history (postgraduate research in Carthusian theology), polo, rowing, sailing, fishing, playing the bagpipes, shooting (game and rifle), Semitic languages, painting, reading and singing.

Michael Patey – Teacher of Maths
Michael joins us from Shoeburyness High School in Southend, where he is currently teaching Mathematics to pupils up to A level. He worked before that at St Paul’s Catholic School in Milton Keynes and has experience teaching across the full spectrum of ages and abilities, including Further Maths. He has recently returned to teaching after an extended period of formation and ministry within the Roman Catholic Church. Michael is also a musician and choral singer.

William Vaughan – Teacher of Maths
William joins us from Warminster School, where he currently works as teacher of Physics and Mathematics, whilst also being the House Master of a senior boys’ boarding house. He has been teaching for 20 years, and has taught a variety of courses, including A level and also BTEC, IB and Core Maths specifications. He has a MA in Education and a PGCE. He has an interest in most forms of adventure training and is a PADI rescue diver. William has been a Cadet Force Officer in three of his former schools, including leading a party to Canada in 2002. He is married to Anna and has three children.

Jamie Clark – Teacher of Art
Jamie is Head of Art at Sherborne International College, before that he worked at Sherborne School. His training as an artist has included a BA in Fine Art from Reading University and MA in Islamic and Traditional Art from The Prince’s School of Traditional Arts. He has a PGCE from Buckingham University. He is also a practising stained glass artist. Jamie is married and has two children.

Holly Warburton – Artist in Residence
Holly graduated from Kingston University with a First Class Honours degree in Illustration and Animation in 2018. She is currently working as an animator and concept artist but her work also covers illustration and printmaking She has recently had a successful exhibition of her figurative work in Bath. Holly specialises in using Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate and After Effects.

George Setterfield – Head of Cricket Development
Having achieved a First Class Honours degree in Sport, Coaching and Physical Education from Oxford Brooke’s University, George has worked extensively as a professional cricket coach. An ECB Level 3 Coach, he is presently the Development Manager for Oxfordshire Cricket Board, overseeing and delivering coaching programmes for over 60 schools in the county, as well as being Head Coach for the Oxfordshire Cricket Board U15 Boys and U17 Girls sides. Alongside these roles, George has also been Head Coach for Oxford University Women’s CC remaining unbeaten in successive varsity fixtures against Cambridge at Lords. A qualified coach educator with a track record of inspiring all players to improve and succeed, I am confident that George will strategically develop the coaching of cricket throughout School and provide leadership of the sport at Downside.

Jonathan Bridges – Head of Academic Music
Jonathan, our new Head of Academic Music, is a native of Surrey. He has a degree in Music from Surrey University and a PGCE from Roehampton. He held various teaching posts before being appointed to his current position as Director of Music at Richard Challoner School, New Malden, where he teaches academic music to A level and directs the school’s choirs, orchestras, bands and musicals. He also founded and runs a thriving Saturday Morning Music School. An accomplished trumpeter, singer and pianist, Jonathan has been leading the National Youth Music Summer Camps for over a decade. As well as music he enjoys running, cycling and racquet sports. He is to marry Helen over the summer, and is greatly looking forward to starting his new life in Somerset.

Amelia Willoughby – Teacher of Psychology
Amelia joins us from Bristol Cathedral Choir School where she is a teacher of Psychology and has been Head of Department. She is currently an examiner for AQA and has led internal CPD INSET at the Cathedral School. She has organised Psychology conferences and is a proponent of ‘flipped learning’. Amelia is committed to planning challenging and inspirational lessons which will appeal to a variety of learning styles. She has also tutored NQTs and been an EFL teaching in the UK and in Thailand. She has a BA in Psychology and a PGCE. Amelia is a mother of three and is a keen runner having completed multiple half marathons.

Ella Hadfield – Graduate Sports Assistant
Ella is a graduate of Cardiff Metropolitan University, where she successfully completed a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science. A Level 2 qualified Netball Coach, she also played netball in the 1st VII at Cardiff Met, competing in the BUCS premiership league and winning gold at the under 19 National Championships in her first year. With extensive experience of coaching a range of sports and working with children to achieve their personal best, we look forward to welcoming Ella to this important residential position in September.

Daniel Webb Graduate Sports Assistant
Daniel is a graduate of the University of Bath where he successfully completed a BSc (Hons) in Politics and International Relations. An alumni of Caterham School in Surrey where he played for the 1st XV, he is also a Level 2 qualified Rugby Coach. Daniel undertook a placement year in the USA where he combined working as a marketing analyst for a BioTech company with coaching rugby for both an adult side in San Diego and as a lead coach for a US High School, reaching the Californian State Final.
