GIRLS’ HOCKEY WINS

Last weekend saw a weekend of fantastic Hockey matches against Leweston School, with the First Team, the U15A and the U13A (Hockey 7s) teams all winning their matches 1-0, 2-0 and 5-2 respectively.

From the First Team Captain, Maria
Leweston have always been a well-matched opponent for the Downside Hockey First Team. The match last Saturday clearly reflected the well-rounded effort of all the girls on pitch. Gameplay started well with an early goal scored from a combined effort between Katie and I, which set the tone for the rest of the play. The forwards played extremely well and there was potential for some really good goals which we can work on for our next matches. The mids and defence, especially Sophie and Celi, worked efficiently in the D preventing the ball from reaching Anna, our goalie. A special mention must go to Bea who really held her own in the mid and helped pass it on to the forwards. Next week we play Prior Park which should be a challenging match but something we will go into prepared and ready to fight for!

From Mr Edge, Head of Hockey regarding the First Team’s match:
Not deterred by recent tough matches against Wells Cathedral School and Godolphin School, the First Team had been training well since their return from the Half Term break. The First Team has a competitive squad, with a number of girls not selected for the weekend match that could quite easily slot into the team seamlessly. This has helped everyone to push hard in training and kept everyone working hard. Saturday’s match finished a well-fought 1-0 to Downside, which rounded off a fantastically competitive set of matches against a good opponent. Thanks to Leweston School for making it a good weekend of Hockey for all the sportswomen involved.
