The Friends of Downside were delighted to host the first Downside Garlic Fest! on Saturday 14th May.
The sun shone brightly on the morning, ensuring that people came from far and wide. Everyone was welcomed at the Abbey Visitor Centre and were invited to try a selection of delicious tasters prepared by the Catering team, using the wild garlic that grows in profusion in the Monastery Gardens.
The Community had also very kindly given permission for the Friends, visitors and guests to then go into the Monastery gardens to ‘pick their own’ garlic, collecting a recipe card for all the ‘tasters’ on the way.
It was a wonderful occasion with people coming from near and far to visit the gardens and take the opportunity to sample this wonderful ‘wild’ product. Our thanks go to the Monks for allowing us to venture into their private gardens – a treat at any time of the year but especially in Spring on a gloriously sunny day!
