Last week Downside gathered together in bubbles for the end-of year Prize Giving events to celebrate pupils’ achievements from the last academic year.

Each of the prize events included a welcome from Mr Hobbs and musical performances from pupils. At the Upper Sixth Form event, Chair of Governors, Dr Mercer, thanked the whole School community for their strength of spirit throughout the pandemic. Matilde Melodia and Owain Daley both received the Gregorian Medal in honour of their service to the School. The Sixth Form then gathered in Downside Abbey Church with their parents and Downside staff for their Leavers’ Mass. It was a particularly moving event and included readings from the Head Boy and singing from the Schola Cantorum. We were played out by Owain on the bagpipes and Angus on drums, accompanied by the Director of Music, Mr McNamara, on the Church’s famous Compton organ.

Our congratulations go not only to our prize winners but to all our pupils who have worked so tremendously hard throughout the year, supported each other and shown incredible resilience during yet another year of challenges.
