Health and Well-Being
Downside School is proud of the outstanding level of pastoral care it provides for student health and well-being.
The school is well-known for its strong sense of community and for the supportive relationships between the age groups. The House system has been developed to provide the best possible support for both boarding and day pupils to allow them to develop true Christian values. We also offer 24/7 healthcare provision and our catering is supplied by a professional team serving around the clock.
The Health Centre
Situated in its own building at the heart of the School, the Health Centre is staffed 24 hours a day by a team of fully qualified nurses who deal with all aspects of primary care. Doctors provide weekday surgeries with appointments possible at any time when necessary.
Children are offered a ‘new pupil check’ by Health Centre staff when they start at Downside, they will be registered as an NHS patient at the School until they leave. Day pupils may remain registered with their own family GP. We also work with Denplan to ensure adequate dental provision for your child during their time at Downside.
Good food is a must at a boarding school; it should be fresh and tasty. Downside aims to provide its pupils with a nutritionally sound and balanced diet that is varied and appealing. Staff and pupils eat together at meal times in the Main Refectory, served from central kitchens on a cafeteria system. We are delighted to work with leading provider Holroyd Howe to deliver a complete service for our pupils.
There is always a vegetarian option as well as meat and fish dishes from the hot counters, a self-service salad bar and fresh fruit available, and also ‘theatre cooking’ serving while-you-wait specials. Individual diet requests are catered for by arrangement.
Pupils are encouraged to submit ideas to the Catering Manager and sensible suggestions are taken up, with suggestions also discussed by the pupil-led School Council.
