As the monastic community prepare to leave Downside, pupils involved with the School’s Oral History Project decided to interview them to capture memories of their time at the School on audio.

With the help of Dr Sanders and Ms Craig, pupils first learned tips and techniques for carrying out oral history interviews. Then, over the course of three days, they enjoyed some very interesting and entertaining interviews with three members of the monastic community – Father James, Father Leo and Father Anselm. The pupils found out about ‘yellows’ (yellow paper used for writing out lines during detention), a memorable meal consisting entirely of potatoes and Father James’ favourite carol service.

The final videoed material will be made available for School projects and, eventually, extracts will be accessible for the wider Downside community and general public to access and enjoy.
