DOWNSIDE ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

In the Summer Term Sixth Form pupils and School Librarian, Janet Craig, started the Downside Oral History Project.

Recording oral history is a rich and rewarding experience; our network of Old Gregorians (OGs) all have a story to tell about their time at Downside which is unique to them, and our Sixth Former interviewers couldn’t wait to start finding out about them. Topics ranged from School trips and House competitions to memories of food and co-curricular activities.

Recording OGs’ memories of their time at Downside is an important part of better understanding our School’s history. With the help of Anthony Steiner (B60) and Peter Jenkins (U67) we were able to begin this journey, and we hope that the Oral History Project will continue for years to come. An archive of the Project will be kept in the Petre Library for pupils and staff to have access to, and, of course, OGs when they visit us.

We would like to thank Anthony and Peter for their help in starting this work, and hope that they will be able to return to the School again to share more of their fascinating stories of Downside times gone by. We will share some of the project online in due course.
