On Saturday 12th March, the Downside Association welcomed Old Gregorians, current and past parents and their families to Downside for Super Saturday. With netball, football, hockey and table tennis all on offer, followed by our delicious match teas served in the Main Hall.

The sun shone for a beautiful Spring afternoon in Somerset with OGs returning to Downside to both watch and play in some of their favourite sports. The day began at 1.30pm with Downside 1st VII Netball against the Old Gregorian Netball Team in the Sports Hall. Organiser of the OG Netball, Annabel Staley (C16), expressed how enjoyable it was to be back at Downside and that the team look forward to returning again in the future.

Outside, the 2nd XI Boys’ Hockey vs West Buckland School began; it was a great game with Downside leading 1-0 till the very end. The 1st XI Football against Warminster kicked off at 2pm with a great end-to-end game and Downside stealing the win 4-3. The competitive spirit did not stop on the Hockey Pitches, with the 1st XI Boys’ Hockey against West Buckland School at 2.45pm.

In the Old Gym, the U18 Table Tennis Tournament against King’s School Bruton made for an exciting set of matches.

The final part of the day involved a team of Downside Mothers play a round robin style game against Downside’s netball players. It was a great experience with mothers thankful that their muscle memory allowed them to score against the well prepared Downside Teams. Emily Chapman, Head of Netball remarked:

‘Super Saturday saw two fantastic netball events. This year (despite trying in 2020 and 2021) we had our first netball OG event with women from different alumni classes coming back and take to the Downside court. It was a fantastic, well-fought match played with the support of a fantastic crowd. The OGs were delighted to be playing once again. We then went on to play a vertical tournament with girls from our U15s, 2nd team, 3rds and 4th mixed together to take on a team of 11 mums and sisters. Much fun, laughter and new perspectives were had by all and some great goals were scored too. Well done to all the participants!’

Overall, the day was a great celebration of the Sport offered at Downside and beyond. With special thanks to the Downside Association for providing a delicious Hot Chocolate welcome drink and to Holroyd Howe for the spectacular match teas. Thank you to all who came on the day to support the School and OG teams. We look forward to welcoming you back to Downside for the next Super Saturday event in the Michaelmas Term of 2022.
