Cricket Success for Downside
There is a lot of great news surrounding Cricket at Downside this week….
Hugo Morgan has been selected for the Somerset County U-17 Cricket squad. Following the recent District Festivals and the training programmes that have run throughout the winter, Somerset Cricket Head Coach Greg Kennis and his team of age group coaches have selected Hugo alongside the best young cricketing talent in the County. We look forward to following Hugo’s progress with Somerset and to witnessing some memorable 1st XI performances here at school this term.
We are thrilled to announce that Cricket Coach, Mr Alfonso Thomas, has joined our experienced team this week. A South African cricketer who has represented his country in Test matches for South Africa ‘A’ and in one Twenty20 International, Alfonso is a right arm fast-medium bowler and a big hitting lower-order batsman. Having played in South African domestic cricket for North West, Northerns, the Titans, the Lions and the Dolphins, Alfonso has also experienced the Indian Premier League for the Pune Warriors and Australian domestic cricket for the Adelaide Strikers and the Perth Scorchers. Alfonso moved to the UK in 2007 and has played English county cricket for Warwickshire and Somerset. Alfonso has played in 91 first-class matches scoring 1,852 runs and taking 306 wickets, including a haul of more than 100 for Somerset in the summer of 2010. In June 2014, Alfonso took four wickets in four balls in a County Championship game against Sussex. Recently retired from professional cricket, Alfonso is developing a reputation as an innovative and inspirational coach. Having recently completed a Level 3 coaching qualification in Cricket, we are thrilled that he will be involved with developing the potential of all young cricketers at Downside School over the forthcoming term and beyond.
