On 4th November our own Concert Band and Glastonbury Brass shared the platform to give an evening of music which was, by turns, both rousing and deeply moving.

Under their Musical Director Dave Heywood, Glastonbury Brass performed a selection of traditional marches and arrangements of music from Wagner to the Beatles. Glastonbury’s playing was highly polished and convincingly stylish in every genre, and the audience was struck by the players’ rich, warm tone, and by their impressively wide dynamic range.

The Concert Band, expertly trained by Mr Bridges, played arrangements from Hairspray and The Blues Brothers, with the Ashokan Farewell providing a more lyrical contrast. Glastonbury played first, and the Concert Band definitely lifted its game in response to give one of its best ever performances. The concert enjoyed further variety from our Drum Line, which impressed the audience with its driving rhythms and slick co-ordination.

The Concert Band is one of over 100 options (of which over 30 are Performing Arts & Media activities) available to pupils as part of the Downside co-curricular programme.
