15 Nov 2016
The pupils of Downside School are celebrating a wonderful season of rugby, as the 1st XV team continues to deliver strong performances against opponents throughout the region. Recent concerns about the safety of schoolboy rugby are taken seriously at Downside under the guidance of former Bath Rugby star, Mike Baxter. The team continues to build in strength and determination, and, in addition, Sam Potts, GB Judo star, also on the staff is teaching the players the art of falling without injury.
Under the guidance of former Bath Rugby star, Mr Mike Baxter, the team continues to build in strength and determination. Today, pupils celebrate six consecutive wins having won 10-0 against Prior Park, this weekend, and 44-0 against King’s Bruton the previous week. Earlier this month they won 23-17 against Farnborough 6th Form College, 30-10 against Christ College, Brecon, 24-22 against King Edward 6th Southampton, and 24-5 against Dauntsey’s.
Downside’s Head of Rugby Development, Mr Baxter, said of the winning streak, ‘ I am really pleased with the season so far, it is great to get a few wins under our belts but I am more pleased in how hard the boys are working for each other and the professional attitude they’re showing towards the programme’.
Additionally, earlier this month pupil, Oliver Church, was nominated for the England Rugby Samsung ‘Try of the Month’ for his fantastic performance during a recent match…he and his team mates are keeping fingers and toes crossed for another win!
