MUSIC

Downside is renowned for the quality of its music and the School is keen that pupils start young. New pupils are encouraged to learn an instrument immediately, and time for lessons is provided within the School timetable. In 2007/08 tuition I the following instruments is available :

clarinet
classical guitar
double bass
drums
flute
horn
oboe
orchestral percussion
organ
piano
saxophone
singing
trombone
trumpet
viola
violin

There is a small stock of School instruments available for hire, although pupils are encouraged to have their own. Pupils in St Oliver’s House have a remarkable success rate in the Associated Board of Royal School of Music Awards, with many achieving distinctions.
