Start of term at Downside!

We’ve almost completed the first week of the new academic year! Those start-of-term nerves are dissipating and everyone is happy to get back into the daily routine.

Boarders returned on Sunday afternoon, with day pupils returning ready for lessons on Monday morning. There was fun for House prefects – the boys of Smythe, in particular, really enjoyed their giant Jenga and pizza night! Pupil numbers have been increasing year on year, since 2014, and we are happy to have welcomed 382 children back to school this week.

Throughout the week, a range of ensembles – including Concert Band, Orchestra and Brass Group – have enjoyed their first rehearsal, and pupils have auditioned for the Schola Cantorum. Preparations for the drama productions of Romeo & Juliet and Guys and Dolls have also been taking place, and some CCF pupils have been able to take part in sailing on Cheddar Reservoir! Head Boy, Derek, and Head Girl, Tallulah, have been settling into their new roles (complete with the new girls’ waistcoat – pictured below – that we hope to roll out for female prefects soon).

Food is very important at boarding school; we all feel better – and perform better – having eaten a nutritious meal. To ensure pupils settle straight back into their routine, the Catering team have been busy producing a delicious selection of hot and cold meals, including some yummy puddings, to help everyone feel at home.

Delicious treats in the Refectory…

This weekend our Hockey and Rugby teams will gear up for fixtures, following their pre-season training… let’s keep fingers and toes crossed for them. It’s been a busy and productive week, and a great start to the year!

Pupils are delighted with the new hockey goals!
