Description

‘Britain’s Greatest Marketeer’ – this was Marketing Magazine’s heading for their profile at the time of Tim’s retirement. The page-turning qualities grip the reader from beginning to end as the reader is carried through his adolescence, university and an exceptional career – International Distillers and Vintners and the world of academia. What singles out the story from other autobiographies is that, although light, vastly amusing and irreverent, it covers serious ground. It is both thought-provoking and a mine of information realised through a devilish sense of humour. The self effacing sub-plot is based on the concept of Tim’s lifespan being part of ‘The Lucky Generation’ – a time when anybody could get a job, profit from house inflation, not have to fight a war, etc. However, one wonders whether it’s really more an enactment of the golfer Lee Trevino’s well known adage ‘the more I practice the luckier I get’.
