Downside School has a strong history of producing talented artists and designers, our Alumni include names such as David Mlinaric, Brion Gysin, and Anthony Palliser.
Art at Downside School
Set in its own buildings, the Art Department is busy and buzzing. Freedom of creativity is the norm: 2-D or 3-D? Textiles or oils? Figurative or abstract? Landscape or portrait? Pupils are encouraged to explore as many styles and media as possible. With an Artist-in-Residence, and regular visits to exhibitions, galleries and museums, pupils are provided with lots of inspiration.
Design and Technology at Downside School
In Design and Technology pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.
The department is popular among students, and runs a number of activities sessions, including Sunday afternoons, outside of timetabled lessons where students who do not pursue the subject formally at GCSE or A level can still use the facilities.
The department is justly proud of it’s A level and GCSE results over recent years, which have been excellent.
