Archive Discoveries

Every week we will be sharing items from the monastery archive and library collections including many new discoveries.

This week we are sharing an interesting find, the first printed edition of the Downside School song. This copy was printed to mark the first public performance of the song and is signed by many of those who were there.

The song was written by Stephen Hewett, a boy from the school and the music was composed by Dom Alphege Shebbeare a monk of the community. Tragically Stephen Hewett was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and he is commemorated in a window in the Lady Chapel in the Abbey Church.
